What Does Decoding Morse Code Mean?

Decoding is the exact reverse of encoding. Each group of signals is matched against the international Morse table – .- becomes A, -... becomes B and so on – and the letters are joined into words using whatever separators your input provides.

Spacing carries all of the meaning on the way back: a single gap splits one letter from the next, while a bigger break starts a new word. That is why this tool reads every common notation – /, |, line breaks and wide space runs are all treated as word boundaries, so text copied from almost anywhere decodes cleanly.

One thing to expect: Morse code has no letter case and no formatting, so the decoded output always arrives as simple uppercase text. It is also worth remembering that Morse is an encoding, not encryption – decoding simply reveals what was never hidden.

What This Tool Does?

Live Decoding: The output updates on every keystroke. You can also click "Decode to Text" after uploading a file or using "Load an example".

Automatic Separator Detection: A single space splits letters, while a slash, a pipe, a new line or a run of two or more spaces starts a new word. There is nothing to configure – paste Morse from our converter, an old telegraph-style file or a website and it just works.

Example: .... .. / - .... . .-. . decodes as HI THERE.

Custom Signal Symbols: If your Morse uses characters other than . and -, fill in the "Dot signal" and "Dash signal" boxes with the two symbols your input actually contains (any two different single characters; spaces, / and | are not allowed).

Example: With * as dot and ~ as dash, *** ~~~ *** decodes as SOS.

Skip & Warn on Invalid Groups: A group that matches no code in the table above – eight dots in a row, say – cannot be decoded, so it is skipped and the result message tells you exactly how many groups were affected instead of failing the whole conversion.

Example: In .... .. / ........ / - .... . .-. ., the middle group is reported as one skipped sequence and the rest decodes as HI THERE.

Simple Uppercase Output: International Morse code has no letter case, so the decoded text always arrives in clean uppercase – no surprise formatting.

FAQs:

FAQ 1: Why is my decoded text all uppercase?
Answer: International Morse code simply has no separate codes for capital and small letters, so there is nothing in the signal to preserve case. Every decoded message arrives as clean uppercase text.

FAQ 2: What exactly counts as a word separator?
Answer: A single space between two groups splits letters. Any of the following starts a new word: a slash /, a pipe |, a new line, or a run of two or more spaces. You can mix them freely in one input.

FAQ 3: Why were some groups skipped?
Answer: A group of dots and dashes that matches no entry in the alphabet chart above cannot be decoded – typical causes are stray punctuation pasted along with the code or a corrupted group such as eight dots in a row. The tool reports how many groups were affected and decodes everything around them.

FAQ 4: My Morse is written with different characters, like asterisks and tildes. Can I decode it?
Answer: Yes. Enter the two characters your input uses in the "Dot signal" and "Dash signal" boxes, and the tool converts them internally before decoding. Leave them as . and - for standard notation.

FAQ 5: Can this tool decode Morse from an audio file or a whistle?
Answer: No. This tool works with Morse written as text notation. The Play button goes the other direction – it sounds out the code you have pasted so you can check its rhythm by ear.

FAQ 6: Is my data sent to a server?
