A QR code (short for Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional barcode that stores data in a square grid of black and white modules. A traditional barcode is read along a single line, but a QR code is read both horizontally and vertically, so it can hold far more information - a web address, a paragraph of text, a Wi-Fi password or a complete contact card. Any modern smartphone camera can read one without a dedicated app: when the camera spots the three large square markers in the corners, it straightens the image, decodes the pattern and shows the result.
The format was invented in 1994 by the Japanese company Denso Wave to track car parts faster on the production line. It was not kept proprietary for general use, which is why QR codes spread so widely - first through manufacturing and logistics, then into advertising, payments, ticketing and everyday tasks. The name "Quick Response" comes from how quickly the code can be captured and understood.
Not every QR code behaves the same way. A static QR code - the kind this tool creates - stores the real data inside the pattern itself. It never expires, needs no server, and cannot be edited after printing. A dynamic QR code stores a short link that redirects to a destination held on a server instead. That makes the destination editable and lets the creator count scans, but the code stops working if the service behind it is shut down. For anything that must keep working for years, static is the safer choice.
QR codes are now everywhere: menus, product labels, business cards, event tickets, museum plaques and payment terminals. Because they connect the physical and digital worlds in a single scan, they are one of the simplest ways to move someone from a poster, package or screen to a website, an app action or a saved contact.
