Overview:

The List Number Generator is a bulk number list creator: it builds a complete sequence from a Start At value to an End At value, counting in the Step you choose, and writes every item in the format you pick – plain numbers, Roman numerals, alphabet letters, hexadecimal, binary or octal. Instead of typing 1, 2, 3, 4... by hand or copying a column from a spreadsheet, you set three fields and the whole list appears at once, ready to copy, download or paste anywhere.

It is useful whenever you need numbered material in bulk: chapter and section numbers for a document, question numbers for a quiz, row labels for a data file, memory addresses or bit patterns for programming, or a ready-made numbering column to paste next to an existing list. Padding, prefix and suffix options shape each item to match your target format, so the output can drop straight into your project.

The tool is written in plain JavaScript and runs entirely in your browser: the sequence is calculated locally on your device, and nothing you enter is sent to or stored on any server.

What This Tool Does:

You provide three numbers – a start, an end and a step – and the tool walks from the start value toward the end value in steps of that size, converting each value into the selected list type. Starting at 1 and ending at 10 with a step of 1 produces ten items; starting at 2 and ending at 20 with a step of 2 produces the ten even numbers in between. A negative step counts down, so starting at 5 and ending at 1 with a step of -1 produces 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Each value is then formatted: numbers can be zero-padded to a fixed width, hexadecimal and binary values come out in the case you choose, and Roman numerals follow the standard subtractive rules (4 as IV, 9 as IX). Finally the items are joined with your chosen separator, either one per line or on a single line separated by commas, semicolons or spaces, and wrapped in your prefix and suffix. If a request is impossible, such as a step of 0 or more alphabet items than there are letters, the output area explains exactly what to change instead of showing an empty result.

How to Use This Tool:

1. Set the range: Type the first value in "Start At", the last value in "End At" and the amount to count by in "Step / Increment".

2. Choose the format: Pick a "List Type", set "Padding" for fixed-width items and choose how items should be joined under "Join With".

3. Generate: With Auto mode on, the list builds itself as you change the settings. You can also press "Generate List" at any time.

4. Copy or download: Use the Copy icon to send the list to your clipboard, or the Download icon to save it as a text file.

5. Start over: Press "Clear Everything" to reset all fields to their defaults, or click the "Load an example" link to see a ready-made list first.

Features:

Start, end and step: Define any ascending or descending sequence. For example, Start At 3, End At 9 and Step 2 produces 3, 5, 7, 9.

Nine list types: Numeric, Roman numerals in upper and lower case, alphabet letters in upper and lower case, hexadecimal in upper and lower case, binary and octal. For example, Start At 1 to End At 5 as lowercase Roman numerals gives i, ii, iii, iv, v.

Zero padding: Pads numeric, hex, binary and octal items with leading zeroes to a fixed width. With padding set to 3, the numbers 1 to 5 become 001, 002, 003, 004, 005.

Prefix and suffix: Wraps every item in text of your choice. A prefix of 0x with uppercase hex from 0 to 9 produces 0x0, 0x1, 0x2... 0x9.

Join options: One item per line for pasting into documents, or a single line joined by commas, semicolons or spaces, or nothing at all between items.

Wrap alphabet: Lets alphabet lists continue past Z in spreadsheet style. Items 24 to 28 with wrapping enabled produce X, Y, Z, AA, AB.

Auto mode: Regenerates the list as you type or change any setting, so you can experiment without pressing a button each time.

Copy and download: Copy the finished list to your clipboard or save it as list-number-generator.txt with one click.

Examples:

Numbering quiz answers A to E: choose the lowercase or uppercase alphabet type, Start At 1, End At 5 and join with new lines to get A through E, one per line.

Even numbers for a raffle sheet: Start At 2, End At 20, Step 2, numeric, joined by commas: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.

Outline sub-sections in lowercase Roman: Start At 1, End At 6, lowercase Roman numerals, one per line: i, ii, iii, iv, v, vi.

Hex offsets for a memory map: Start At 0, End At 15, uppercase hex, padding 2 and prefix 0x: 0x00, 0x01, 0x02... 0x0F.

Binary patterns for a truth table: Start At 0, End At 7, binary, padding 3: 000, 001, 010, 011, 100, 101, 110, 111.

Counting down for a launch checklist: Start At 10, End At 1, Step -1, numeric, one per line: 10, 9, 8... 1.

FAQs

FAQ 1: How many items can the list contain?
Answer: Up to 100,000 items per list. If your range would produce more than that, the tool tells you the exact count and asks you to narrow the range or use a larger step, so the browser never freezes on an accidental 1-to-a-billion request.

FAQ 2: Can the list count backwards?
Answer: Yes. Enter a negative step, such as -1, and set End At lower than Start At. The list then counts down, for example 10, 9, 8... 1.

FAQ 3: What happens when an alphabet list reaches Z?
Answer: The "Wrap alphabet" option is on by default, so the list continues in spreadsheet-column style: X, Y, Z, AA, AB, AC and so on for as many items as your range covers. If you untick it, the tool stops at 26 items (A to Z) and explains why when a range would go beyond that.

FAQ 4: Why does a Roman numeral list refuse my range?
Answer: Classic Roman numerals only exist for the numbers 1 to 3999 (I to MMMCMXCIX). If your start or end falls outside that window, the tool explains the limit so you can adjust the range.

FAQ 5: Does padding apply to Roman numerals and letters?
Answer: No. Zero padding only makes sense for digit-based formats, so it applies to numeric, hexadecimal, binary and octal items. Roman numerals and alphabet letters are never padded.

FAQ 6: Is this tool free to use?
Answer: Yes, the List Number Generator is completely free with no sign-up. All generation happens in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to or stored on any server.
