Overview

The "Remove Empty Lines" tool is a free utility tool that scans your text and deletes every line that is truly blank - as well as lines that contain only spaces or tabs. In a single click it turns messy, gap-filled text into a clean, compact block that is ready to copy, download, or paste straight back into your document.

Only empty lines are removed. Every line that holds real content is kept exactly as it is, with its words, punctuation, indentation, and spacing untouched. For extra control, two switches sit right above the buttons: Remove whitespace-only lines (on by default) and Trim each line (off by default).

Everything runs locally in your browser, so your text never leaves your device and nothing is ever uploaded or stored. The tool is free to use, needs no account, works on any device with a modern browser, and handles large texts with ease, making it just as handy for a quick cleanup as for preparing a big file.

How to Use This Tool

1. Add your text: Paste or type it into the "Input" field, or click "Upload a file" to load a text file. Use "Load an example" to try a sample.

2. Choose your options: "Remove whitespace-only lines" is on by default; "Trim each line" is off by default.

3. Remove the empty lines: Click the "Remove Empty Lines" button. The cleaned text appears in the "Output" field together with a message showing how many empty lines were removed.

4. Save the result: Copy it to the clipboard or download it as a text file. "Clear & Reset" empties both fields when you want to start over.

Features & Options

Input & Output: The "Input" textarea is where you type, paste or upload your text. The cleaned text is shown in the "Output" textarea, ready to copy or download.

Remove whitespace-only lines (on by default): An "empty" line usually means a line with no characters at all, but a line can also look blank while holding spaces or a tab. When this switch is on, those whitespace-only lines are removed along with truly empty ones.

Input (the 2nd line is blank, the 4th line holds only spaces):

Alpha

Beta

Gamma

Output with the switch ON - both the blank line and the spaces-only line are gone:

Alpha
Beta
Gamma

With the switch off, only the truly blank line is removed and the spaces-only line stays in the output.

Trim each line (off by default): Removes the leading and trailing spaces/tabs from every line it keeps. For example, "  Hello   " becomes "Hello". This switch never decides which lines are empty — that is the job of the switch above.

Load an example: Loads a sample text containing blank lines and whitespace-only lines so you can test the tool instantly.

Upload a file: Reads a text file from your device into the "Input" field — handy for cleaning saved files.

Copy & Download: "Copy" puts the output on your clipboard for pasting elsewhere; "Download" saves it as a text file.

Remove Empty Lines button: The central action — it processes the input text and writes the cleaned result to the "Output" field.

Clear & Reset: Clears both textareas and resets the tool to its initial state.

When to Use This Tool?

✅Text copied from PDFs, emails or web pages often arrives with uneven blank gaps between lines. This tool pulls the content lines together into a compact, clean block.

✅Log files and exported dat frequently contain stray blank lines that get in the way before the text is imported into a spreadsheet or database. Removing them upfront keeps the data tidy.

✅Code and configuration file can behave differently with or without blank lines, so a quick pass to strip them out can help when formatting or comparing files.

✅Chat threads, transcripts and list pasted from messaging apps are usually full of blank lines. Cleaning them makes the content far easier to read, scan or reuse.

FAQs

FAQ 1: What counts as an empty line?
Answer: With "Remove whitespace-only lines" on (the default), a line is treated as empty when it has no visible content, including lines that hold only spaces or tabs. Turn the switch off to keep whitespace-only lines and remove only lines with zero characters.

FAQ 2: What is the difference between this tool and "Remove Line Breaks"?
Answer: "Remove Line Breaks" collapses runs of extra line breaks into a single line break, so it keeps the line structure of your text. This tool instead deletes every empty line completely, so content lines are pulled together with no gaps at all.

FAQ 3: Does this tool change my content?
Answer: No. Every line that has real content is kept exactly as it is, indentation included, unless you turn on "Trim each line", which strips leading and trailing whitespace from the kept lines. Only empty (or whitespace-only) lines are removed.

FAQ 4: What happens to blank lines at the start or end of my text, and to Windows line endings?
Answer: Leading and trailing empty lines are removed like any other blank line. Input with Windows (CRLF) line endings is handled automatically, and the output is written with standard (LF) line endings.

FAQ 5: Can it handle large texts?
Answer: Yes. Processing happens entirely in your browser, so the tool can handle texts of several megabytes. Extremely large files may take a moment depending on your device.

FAQ 6: Is my text private?
Answer: Yes. The tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded to or stored on our servers.
