Overview

The "Vowel and Consonant Manipulator" is a free utility that lets you act on the vowels and consonants in your text in one place. You can remove all vowels or all consonants, replace individual letters with symbols, other letters or accented characters, or duplicate every target letter a set number of times – then copy or download the result.

It is especially handy for word games and puzzles, for cleaning up text before it is read aloud, for creating quick obfuscated or stylised strings, and for exploring how a piece of writing changes when its vowels or consonants are taken away. Two live statistics panels show the character, letter, vowel, consonant and punctuation counts for both the input and the output, so you can see exactly what the change did.

The tool is written in PHP, HTML, CSS and vanilla JavaScript using the site's shared Toolkit helper. Every change runs locally in your browser, so your text never leaves your device, nothing is uploaded or stored, and it works on any device with a modern browser – free, with no account needed.

What This Tool Does

You choose an operation and a set of targets, and the tool applies them to your text. In Remove mode it deletes every targeted letter. In Replace mode it applies your own from=to rules. In Duplicate mode it repeats every targeted letter a chosen number of times.

The targets decide which letters count as vowels and consonants. By default the five standard vowels a, e, i, o, u are treated as vowels and the rest of the alphabet as consonants, but you can add the letter y, include accented vowels such as à, é, ï, ö, ü, add your own symbols, and skip any letters you want left alone. The two statistics panels recount the characters, letters, vowels, consonants and punctuation marks in the input and the output, updating live.

How to Use This Tool

1. Add your text: Paste or type it into the "Input" field, click "Upload a file" to load a text file, or use "Load an example" to try a sample.

2. Pick an operation: Choose Remove, Replace or Duplicate.

3. Set the targets: Turn on Vowels and/or Consonants, and optionally include "y", accented vowels, or extra letters and symbols.

4. Adjust the mode options: In Replace mode pick one accent style for all vowels from the dropdown (or type comma-separated custom rules); in Duplicate mode set the repeat count; in Remove mode you can turn on clean up double spaces.

5. Manipulate: Click "Manipulate". The result appears in the "Output" field with its own statistics. With Live mode on, the output updates as you type or change any option.

Examples

Every example below loads its own text and options – click "Try it" to generate the result in the "Output" field.

1. Remove all vowels

Strip every vowel from the sentence so only the consonants and punctuation survive.

Input
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog while the gentle breeze carries the scent of fresh rain.
Output
Th qck brwn fx jmps vr th lzy dg whl th gntl brz crrs th scnt f frsh rn.

2. Remove all consonants

Delete every consonant and keep only the vowels and punctuation, so the shape of each word is still hinted at.

Input
A quiet afternoon settles over the sleepy valley as the warm light fades.
Output
A uie aeoo ee oe e ee ae a e a i ae.

3. Replace vowels with symbols

Map each vowel to a number or symbol with comma-separated rules, turning the sentence into a playful cipher.

Input
The eagle soars high above the open water.
Output
Th3 3@gl3 s0@rs h1gh @b0v3 th3 0p3n w@t3r.

4. Duplicate every vowel

Repeat each vowel twice so every vowel-heavy word is stretched out.

Input
A cool breeze blows over the quiet lake.
Output
AA cooool breeeezee bloows ooveer thee quuiieet laakee.

5. Remove accented vowels too

Turn on "Include accented vowels" and "Clean up double spaces", then remove the vowels from a French phrase.

Input
Café au lait déjà vu and à la carte.
Output
Cf lt dj v nd l crt.

Features & Options

Operation - Remove: Deletes every targeted letter. With Clean up double spaces on, the extra space left when a whole word disappears is collapsed into a single space.

Operation - Replace: Pick an accented character for each vowel from the dropdowns, or type comma-separated from=to rules in the Custom rules box. Leave a vowel on "Keep unchanged" to leave it alone.

Use accented vowels: On by default. When on and Vowels is selected, a dropdown lets you pick one accent style – Acute, Grave, Circumflex or Umlaut – that is applied to all vowels at once. Turn it off to hide the dropdown and replace any letter with a custom rule instead.

Custom rules (optional): A comma-separated list of from=to rules that work on any character, for example a=@, b=#, o= (leave the right side empty to delete). This is the way to replace consonants, symbols or extra letters.

Accent character map: Copy any character below when you need an accented vowel:

VowelAcuteGraveCircumflexUmlaut
aáàâä
eéèêë
iíìîï
oóòôö
uúùûü
yý––ÿ

Operation - Duplicate: Repeats each targeted letter the chosen number of times, so a repeat count of 2 turns cat into caat.

Targets - Vowels / Consonants: Turn on Vowels to act on a, e, i, o, u, or Consonants to act on the rest of the alphabet. Both can be on at the same time.

Include "y": Treats y as a vowel, so it is removed or duplicated alongside the other vowels.

Include accented vowels: Adds accented vowels such as à, é, ï, ö, ü to the vowel set, so letters with diacritics are handled like their plain counterparts.

Additional letters/symbols: Lets you type extra characters to act on, such as a symbol used in place of a vowel or uppercase letters when case is sensitive.

Letters to skip: Keeps the typed letters untouched even when they would otherwise match a target.

Case sensitive: When on, only lowercase targets are acted on (uppercase letters are preserved unless you add them in Additional letters). When off, both cases are treated alike.

Two-pass substitution: In Replace mode, runs all the rules a second time, so a letter that was changed by one rule can be changed again by a later rule.

Statistics panels: The Input and Output panels each show the total characters, letters, vowels, consonants and punctuation marks, updating live as you type.

Copy & Download: "Copy" puts the output on your clipboard for pasting elsewhere; "Download" saves it as a text file.

When to Use This Tool?

Word games and puzzles: Remove vowels or consonants to create fill-in-the-blank style clues, or scramble the letter pattern so a player has to guess the word.

Studying letter frequency: The statistics panels show exactly how many vowels and consonants a passage holds, which is useful for language exercises and writing analysis.

Building playful text: Use Replace rules to swap vowels for symbols, giving a text a stylised, leetspeak or decorative look.

Quick obfuscation: Stripping the vowels or doubling the consonants makes a snippet harder to read at a glance. This is visual obfuscation only – it is not encryption, so do not use it to protect anything sensitive.

Checking language patterns: Include accented vowels to see how a French, German or Spanish phrase behaves, and to confirm that accented letters are counted as vowels.

FAQs

FAQ 1: Which letters count as vowels?
Answer: By default the five standard vowels a, e, i, o, u are used. You can also include y and accented vowels such as à, é, ï, ö, ü.

FAQ 2: How do I replace a letter with a symbol?
Answer: Switch to Replace mode and pick one accent style from the dropdown to apply to all vowels. To use a symbol or to replace consonants or other letters, type a comma-separated rule in the Custom rules box, for example a=@, b=#.

FAQ 3: How do I just delete a letter?
Answer: Use Remove mode to delete all targeted letters, or in Replace mode add a custom rule like o= (with the right side left empty) in the Custom rules box.

FAQ 4: What does "Clean up double spaces" do?
Answer: When you remove every letter of a word, two spaces are often left back to back. This option collapses those consecutive spaces into a single space, so the remaining words read more naturally.

FAQ 5: Why did the vowel count not change when I turned on "Case sensitive"?
Answer: The statistics panel counts letters regardless of the action. The Case sensitive option only changes which letters are acted on – when on, only lowercase targets are touched, so uppercase vowels are preserved.

FAQ 6: Is my text private?
Answer: Yes. The tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded to or stored on our servers.
