Overview

Diacritics are the small marks added above, below, or through a letter to change how it sounds or is read — like the acute on café, the tilde on ño, or the umlaut on für. The "Add Letter Accents" tool places these marks on the letters in your text: it replaces each plain letter with its accented equivalent based on the accent style you choose.

You can pick a ready-made style (Acute, Grave, Circumflex, Tilde, Umlaut, or a varying Random Mix), or write your own mapping that links any source letters to any target letters — including multi-letter pairs such as ss → ß or ae → æ. A pattern mode lets you accent every match, every Nth match, or only the first or last match per line.

This is useful both for language work and for purely decorative text such as stylized headings and social-media bios. The tool runs entirely in your browser, keeps letter case, and leaves already-accented letters untouched.

How to Use This Tool

1. Add your text: Paste or type it into the "Input" field, upload or drop a text file, or use "Load an example".

2. Pick an accent style: Choose from Random Mix, Acute, Grave, Circumflex, Tilde, Umlaut, or Custom mapping.

3. Choose a pattern: Set how many matches are accented with All occurrences, Every Nth, First per line, or Last per line.

4. Copy or download: The result appears in the "Output" field. Copy it, download it as a file, or use "Clear & Reset" to start over.

Examples

1. Acute accents

The Acute style adds a ´ to every vowel. Try it on a café-style phrase.

Input
A cafe in a far away town serves the finest coffee.
Output (Acute)
Á cáfé ín á fár áwáy tówn sérvés thé fínést cófféé.

Case is preserved, so the leading "A" becomes "Á" and the lowercase vowels get lowercase accents.

2. Umlaut accents

The Umlaut style adds a ¨ (diaeresis) to every vowel.

Input
The green house by the lake looked old.
Output (Umlaut)
Thë grëën höüsë by thë läkë löökëd öld.

Spaces, punctuation and line breaks stay exactly where they are; only the vowels change.

3. Random mix

The Random Mix style gives each vowel a different accent, which is great for an eye-catching heading or a social-media bio.

Input
Follow me for a daily dose of inspiration
Output (Random Mix)
Fóllõw mẽ fór à dâíly dõsë ôf ínspĩrätïõn

Because the mix is random, the exact accents change on every run — the above shows just one possible result.

Features & Options

Random Mix: Adds a different accent to each vowel, chosen at random from Acute, Grave, Circumflex, Tilde and Umlaut. For example, input "hello" might become:

héllõ

Acute: Adds á é í ó ú (with capitals). Input "ao" becomes "áó".

Grave: Adds à è ì ò ù. Input "ao" becomes "àò".

Circumflex: Adds â ê î ô û. Input "ao" becomes "âô".

Tilde: Adds ã õ and also accents n to ñ. Input "mano" becomes "mãñõ".

Umlaut: Adds ä ë ï ö ü. Input "ao" becomes "äö".

Pattern mode: Controls which matching letters are accented. All occurrences accents every match; Every Nth accents the Nth, 2Nth and so on; First per line and Last per line accent only the first or last match of each line. For example, "aluminium" with Umlaut at Every 2nd gives "alüminïum" — the 2nd and 4th vowels get the mark.

Match case: On (the default) keeps the original case, so A becomes Á and a becomes á. Off converts to lowercase output, so an A becomes á too.

Custom mapping: Write your own rules, one per line, in the form source => target. Both sides may be one or more characters, so you can map ss => ß or ae => æ. With Match case on, a single-letter rule such as a => á also handles A => Á automatically.

Already-accented letters: Letters that already carry an accent are left as they are, so a é in your input is never turned into a double-marked letter.

Live mode: On by default, updates the output as you type or change a setting. Turn it off and press "Add Letter Accents" to apply the settings on demand.

Copy & Download: "Copy" puts the output on your clipboard; "Download" saves it as a text file.

FAQs

FAQ 1: What is the difference between the accent styles?
Answer: Each style uses a different mark. Acute adds á é, Grave adds à è, Circumflex adds â ê, Tilde adds ã ñ, Umlaut adds ä ö, and Random Mix gives each vowel a different mark.

FAQ 2: What does Random Mix do?
Answer: It applies a randomly chosen accent to each vowel, so a single piece of text ends up with a varied, decorative mix. The result changes every time you run it.

FAQ 3: Can I add accents of my own?
Answer: Yes. Choose "Custom mapping" and type one rule per line in the form source => target. You can map single letters or whole strings, for example ss => ß.

FAQ 4: Will it change letters that already have accents?
Answer: No. Letters that already carry an accent are left unchanged, so existing ü or ñ won't be altered or doubled.

FAQ 5: Does changing the letter case make a difference?
Answer: With "Match case" on (the default), an uppercase letter gets an uppercase accent (Á) and a lowercase letter gets a lowercase accent (á). Turn it off to always produce lowercase output.

FAQ 6: Is my text private?
Answer: Yes. The tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded to or stored on our servers.
