The "Add Line Numbers" tool inserts a sequential label at the beginning of every line in your text. You can choose between numbers, Roman numerals, and letters (A1 / spreadsheet style), and customise the prefix, suffix, wrapping format, padding, and more.
The original input stays untouched in the "Input" field while the numbered result is written to the "Output" field, ready to copy or download. The tool is free, requires no account, and runs entirely in your browser.
1. Add your text: Paste or type it into the "Input" field, click "Upload a file" to load a text file, or use "Load an example" to try a sample.
2. Choose a mode: Pick Numbers (the default), Roman Numerals, or Letters, and adjust the options (start value, prefix, suffix, format, zero-padding, and so on).
3. Add the numbers: Click the "Add Line Numbers" button. The result appears in the "Output" field. Copy or download the result, and use "Clear & Reset" to start over.
The default settings add 1. before each line.

Numbers mode: Adds numeric labels (1, 2, 3...). Accepts positive integers, negative numbers, and zero as the starting value. For example, starting at 1 with the default format Number.:

Roman Numerals mode: Adds Latin numeral labels (I, II, III...) for values 1–3999. Enter the Roman numeral equivalent in the "Start at" box (e.g. IV to start from 4). With uppercase on:

Letters mode: Adds alphabetic labels in A1 / spreadsheet style: A, B, ... Z, AA, AB, AC and so on. Enter the letter equivalent in the "Start at" box (e.g. D to start from the 4th letter). With uppercase on:

Start at: Sets the initial number, Roman numeral, or letter for the sequence. The value updates automatically when you switch modes (1 for Numbers, I for Roman, A for Letters). For example, starting Numbers at 10:

Prefix / Suffix: The prefix is inserted before the number; the suffix is inserted between the number and the line content. For example, prefix "Line " and suffix " - " with Roman numerals:

Format: Controls how the number is wrapped. Four options are available:

Zero-pad: (Numbers mode only) Pads numbers with leading zeros to a specified width. For example, width 3 turns 1 into 001:

Skip empty lines: When on (the default), blank lines are left unnumbered and the counter is not incremented. Input:

FAQ 1: How many lines can I number at once?
Answer: The tool handles large texts up to the browser's textarea limit. For very large files, the processing is instant since it runs locally in your browser.
FAQ 2: Can I number only selected lines?
Answer: Currently the tool numbers all non-empty lines in the input. To number only specific lines, paste only those lines into the input field.
FAQ 3: What happens when Roman numerals go past 3999?
Answer: Roman numerals are only supported up to 3999 (MMMCMXCIX). If the sequence exceeds that, the label will be left blank for those lines. Use Numbers or Letters mode for very long lists.
FAQ 4: Does the tool modify my original text?
Answer: No. The "Input" field is never modified. Only the copy in the "Output" field reflects the line numbers you added.
FAQ 5: Can I remove line numbers I previously added?
Answer: The tool is designed to add numbers, not remove them. To undo, paste the original un-numbered text back into the Input field and use "Clear & Reset".
FAQ 6: Is my text private?
Answer: Yes. The tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded to or stored on our servers.
