Overview

The Add Symbols Around Letters and Words tool is a free browser utility that surrounds every letter - or every whole word - with your own pair of symbols. Choose a left symbol and a right symbol, and Latte Art becomes (L)(a)(t)(t)(e) (A)(r)(t) with brackets, «Latte» «Art» in word mode, or any other decoration you type in - quotes, dashes, stars, geometric glyphs or emoji.

Decorated text is everywhere once you look for it: eye-catching captions and chat nicknames, starred list items and menu specials, character arrays and quoted lists for code snippets, festive headings in plain-text emails, and readable "spelled out" strings for teaching. Wrapping dozens of letters by hand is slow and easy to get wrong - one missed bracket and the whole look falls apart. This tool applies your decoration to every target in one pass, with live output and exact character counts.

The idea comes from the classic "add symbols around letters" concept popularized by onlinetexttools.com, and this tool was written from scratch in plain JavaScript and runs entirely in your web browser. Your text never leaves your device, there is no account to create and nothing is stored anywhere - which makes it just as safe for private notes as for public posts.

How to Use This Tool

1. Enter your text: Paste or type the text you want to decorate into the "Input" box, or upload a .txt/.rtf file of up to 50,000 characters.

2. Choose what to wrap: Set Wrap target to Letters (every letter gets its own pair), Words (each whole word is wrapped as one unit), or Letters and words (a word gets an outer pair and each letter inside gets its own).

3. Pick your symbols: Type anything into Left symbol and Right symbol - single characters, multi-character strings or emoji - or click one of the Quick symbol pairs to fill both fields at once.

4. Fine-tune the targets: Turn Wrap digits too on or off, list any Extra characters (spaces, commas, punctuation) that should also be wrapped, enable Squish repeated symbols to join doubles into one, and keep Skip empty lines on so blank lines stay blank.

5. Use the result: With Live mode on (the default), the output updates as you type and change settings; otherwise press Wrap Text. Copy and Download sit at the foot of the output box, character counters show both lengths, Undo/Redo step through recent inputs, and Clear & Reset restores the starting state.

Examples

Every example below loads its own text and settings - click "Try it" and the tool does the rest.

1. Dress up a cafe sign

Wrap each letter of a chalkboard sign in star glyphs - the button loads the ✦ ✧ pair and lists the exclamation mark as an extra character to wrap.

Input
FRESH ROASTED COFFEE!
Output
✦F✧✦R✧✦E✧✦S✧✦H✧ ✦R✧✦O✧✦A✧✦S✧✦T✧✦E✧✦D✧ ✦C✧✦O✧✦F✧✦F✧✦E✧✦E✧✦!✧

2. Tag a team roster

Wrap each full name in guillemets at once - the button switches the wrap target to Words and loads the « » pair.

Input
Ava Mesa
Liam Ortega
Noor Haddad
Output
«Ava» «Mesa»
«Liam» «Ortega»
«Noor» «Haddad»

3. Build a quoted character array

Turn a word into a quoted, comma-separated letter list - the button sets the left symbol to a double quote and the right to a quote followed by a comma and a space.

Input
MANGO
Output
"M", "A", "N", "G", "O",

4. Squish repeated dashes

Use the same dash on both sides and collapse the doubles into one - the button enables Squish and lists space, comma, period and apostrophe as extra characters.

Input
COFFEE FIRST, THEN WORK.
Output
-C-O-F-F-E-E- -F-I-R-S-T-,- -T-H-E-N- -W-O-R-K-.-

Features

Three wrap targets: Letters wraps every letter on its own - Icy becomes «I»«c»«y». Words wraps each whole word as one unit - «Icy». Letters and words does both at once - the word gets an outer pair and every letter inside gets its own: ««I»«c»«y»».

Any symbols on each side: The left and right fields accept single characters, multi-character strings or emoji, and they do not have to match - Latte with [ and ] becomes [L][a][t][t][e], while both sides set to – give –L–a–t–t–e– once squished.

Quick symbol pairs: Six one-click presets - ( ), « », ✦ ✧, ★ ☆, 【 】 and a dash - fill both fields instantly, and you can still edit them afterwards.

Wrap digits too: On by default, so numbers join the decoration: Route 66 becomes (R)(o)(u)(t)(e) (6)(6). Turn it off and the same input gives (R)(o)(u)(t)(e) 66 - letters only.

Extra characters: List any characters - a space, a comma, an exclamation mark - and they are wrapped as well: Hot! with ! listed becomes (H)(o)(t)(!). Anything not listed passes through untouched.

Squish repeated symbols: When the left and right symbols are the same, doubles between neighbouring targets collapse into one: Icy with dashes goes from the doubled -I--c--y- to a clean -I-c-y-.

Skip empty lines and live counts: Blank lines stay blank, both character counters update as you work, and Copy, Download, Undo, Redo and Clear & Reset cover the rest of the workflow.

FAQs

FAQ 1: What is the difference between Letters, Words and Letters and words?
Answer: Letters wraps every letter individually («I»«c»«y»), Words wraps each whole word as a single unit («Icy»), and Letters and words applies an outer wrap to the word plus an inner wrap to each of its letters (««I»«c»«y»»).

FAQ 2: Can the symbols be emoji or more than one character?
Answer: Yes. Each field accepts up to 12 characters, so pairs like ⋆。˚ ˚。⋆-style strings and emoji all work. The left and right symbols do not have to match or be the same length.

FAQ 3: When does "Squish repeated symbols" take effect?
Answer: Only when the left and right symbols are identical. Then the double symbol that forms where two wrapped targets touch is collapsed into a single one. With different symbols there is nothing to squish and both fields are used as written.

FAQ 4: Which characters get wrapped by default?
Answer: All letters - including accented ones like é, ñ and ü - plus digits when "Wrap digits too" is on. Spaces, punctuation and line breaks pass through unchanged unless you list them in the "Extra characters" field.

FAQ 5: Why does the character-array output end with a trailing comma?
Answer: The right symbol is attached to every wrapped letter, including the last one, so ", " leaves a trailing separator. That is usually harmless inside array literals and spreadsheet formulas; delete it by hand if your target format does not allow it.

FAQ 6: Is my text sent to a server or saved anywhere?
Answer: No. The tool is written in JavaScript and runs entirely in your browser. Your text never leaves your device, nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored, so it is safe for private notes and public posts alike.
