Overview

The "Swap Letters in Words" tool is a free utility that scrambles text by reversing small groups of adjacent letters inside every word. By default it swaps pairs of letters, so "elephants" becomes "lepeahtns" - a quick, playful cryptogram you can read back once you know the trick.

You control how many letters sit in each group, whether a short leftover at the end of a word is also swapped, and whether the original capitalisation is kept. Two extra settings decide what happens with hyphens and apostrophes, so words like "ice-cream" and "you're" are handled exactly the way you want.

Everything runs locally in your browser, so your text never leaves your device and nothing is ever uploaded or stored. The tool is free to use, needs no account, and works on any device with a modern browser.

How to Use This Tool

1. Add your text: Paste or type it into the "Input" field, click "Upload a file" to load a text file, or use "Load an example" to try a sample.

2. Set the group size: The field is pre-set to 2 (swap pairs). Raise it to 3 or more to reverse longer packs of letters at a time.

3. Adjust the options: Turn on "Swap incomplete groups" if you want a short leftover at the end of a word swapped too, and keep "Preserve case" on so capitals stay at the start of sentences. Pick how hyphens and apostrophes behave.

4. Swap the letters: Click the "Swap Letters" button. The scrambled text appears in the "Output" field with a message showing how many words were processed. Copy or download the result, and use "Clear & Reset" to start over.

Features & Options

Input & Output: The "Input" textarea is where you type, paste or upload your text. The swapped result is shown in the "Output" textarea, ready to copy or download.

Group size (default: 2): The number of adjacent letters packed together and reversed. With 2, pairs swap: "hello" becomes "ehllo". With 3, packs of three reverse: "flower" becomes "olfrew".

Swap incomplete groups (off by default): When a word's length is not a multiple of the group size, the leftover letters at the end form a short group. Off leaves them as-is - "flower" with size 4 gives "wolfer"; on swaps the leftover too, giving "wolfre".

Preserve case (on by default): The case follows the original position. In "Cows are white" the first letter stays capital, so the result is "Ocsw rea hwtie". Off lets each letter keep its own case and move with it: "oCsw rea hwtie".

Hyphens - Stop / Swap / Skip: "ice-cream" with size 2 becomes "cie-rcaem" (Stop, each part swapped), "ci-ercaem" (Swap, the hyphen moves with the letters), or "cic-eerma" (Skip, the hyphen is ignored then put back).

Apostrophes - Stop / Swap / Skip: The same three rules apply to apostrophes. "you're" with Stop gives "uoy'er"; Swap treats the apostrophe as a letter; Skip ignores it and reinserts it.

FAQs

FAQ 1: What does "group size" do?
Answer: It sets how many adjacent letters are packed together and reversed. Size 2 swaps pairs, size 3 reverses triplets, and so on. The word "flower" with size 3 becomes "olfrew".

FAQ 2: Why does the end of my word stay unchanged?
Answer: When a word's length is not a multiple of the group size, the leftover letters form a short final group. "Swap incomplete groups" is off by default, so that leftover is left as-is. Turn it on to reverse the leftover too.

FAQ 3: How do hyphens and apostrophes behave?
Answer: Each can be Stop (the symbol stays put and the parts on each side are swapped separately, e.g. "cie-rcaem"), Swap (the symbol moves with the letters, e.g. "ci-ercaem"), or Skip (the symbol is ignored while swapping, then put back, e.g. "cic-eerma").

FAQ 4: Why did my capital letter move?
Answer: With "Preserve case" off, each letter keeps its own upper/lower case and travels with the swap. Turn "Preserve case" on and the case follows the original position instead, so a capital at the start of a sentence stays at the start.

FAQ 5: Does this tool change my original text?
Answer: No. The "Input" field is never modified; only the copy in the "Output" field reflects the swapped letters and your options.

FAQ 6: Is my text private?
Answer: Yes. The tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded to or stored on our servers.
